Highland Students Continue to
Bring Home the Gold (and Silver)!!

What a great day Highland High School had at District Vocal Solo and Ensemble Contest. We had 13 silver medal soloists and 27 gold medal soloists including the following who are state bound in two weeks: Brianna Loudermilk, Brittany Siver, Brittany Cruz, Erin Perry, Kayleigh Ferguson, Kennedy Vernengo, Kyrstyn Glover, Marisa Anderson, Megan Herron, Morgan Greathouse, Olivia Ottman, Olivia Smith, Paige Fanning, Tori Smith, Adrienne Valdez, Alex Traina, Chris Peters, Conner Giermski, David Allison, Hayden Greathouse, Nate Taillon, and Scott Panchisin, We also had 3 silver medal performing ensembles and 16 gold medal performing ensembles including the following who are also state bound in two short weeks: The Gierymski Men's Barbershop, the Panchisin Men's Barbershop, the Bertalan Women's Barbershop, The Fanning Women's Barbershop, the Munoz Women's Barbershop, The Smith Women's Small Ensemble, The Cruz Women's Large Ensemble, the DeMarco Women's Large Ensemble, The Wagner Women's Large Ensemble, The Pizzuto Men's Large Ensemble, the Smith Mixed Large Ensemble and the Traina Mixed Large Ensemble. While not the most soloists we've ever taken to State, twelve ensembles is more ensembles than the last two years combined. Of special note from Saturday is the Traina Ensemble that sang Salmo 150 and received a perfect score as well as soloist Erin Perry who also received a perfect score. Congrats to everyone!

Just Keep on Coming!

What a great weekened Highland had at ISSMA District Vocal Solo and Ensemble Contest. Highland Middle School had 27 Gold performances and 1 silver performance! We have three young ladies that will be going to State Contest in two weeks: Hannah Rebey, Sophia Procida, and Kaitlyn Tiemens! Congrats, ladies! Of special note, both Jordan Warren and Catheryn Markus received PERFECT scores on their piano solos and Rachel Stange received a PERFECT score on her vocal solo in her division. Also of special note, is Natalie Bartlett whose judge simply wrote "WOW" in big capital letters across the entire form! Congrats to everyone!


CONGRATULATIONS to all the HHS Orchestra students who participated in Solo & Ensemble over the weekend at Crown Point High School. Highland Orchestras performed a combined SEVENTY-FOUR events, earning a total of 59 gold ratings, 14 silver ratings, and one bronze rating. The following high schoolers are also advancing to state solo & ensemble contest after earning a gold rating on their performance: Felipe Caldeira, Dustin DuFault, Wyatt Kucginski, and Ishaan Patel. Wish them the best of luck as they prepare for next month's event in Indianapolis.

CONGRATULATIONS to the HHS Band members on their performances on Saturday at Crown Point HS for the annual Solo and Ensemble Festival. Our students performed solos (several on more than one instrument) in front of a public audience and a judge, along with thousands of students from Lake County . HHS Band students earned 15 gold and 16 silver ratings.  Tyler Allen earned gold on clarinet AND tenor sax.  Jonas Rigney, Sierra Laviolette, and Julia Makowski earned golds on their trio AND solo.   Special Congrats to Jude (alto sax) and Ghenella (flute) Salanio on qualifying for State Festival in Indianapolis  on Feb. 25.  



With a score of over 25,000 points, the Academic Decathlon team took first place in the area competition this past Saturday at Crown Point High School. Congratulations are in order for Leah Thornton, Heaven Phillips, Matt Cotner, Chris Peters, Jade Watts, Mackenzie Lewis, Victoria Shamel, and Natalie Szabo who all medaled or achieved high scores in many of the events. Special congratulations to Zach Fraley for successfully defending his spot as the gold medal recipient for overall individual score, as he medaled in every category. Congratulations, all, and good luck at the state competition in February!

Northwestern University's Midwest Academic Talent Search (NUMATS)
plans to offer the PSAT 8/9 as an above-grade-level assessment
to students in grades 3-6 in 2016-17. If you would like your child
to take the PSAT 8/9 during the 2016-17 school year, contact
Dr. Sherri L. Mitchell, Director High Ability or Mr. JJ Boylan, Elementary 
High Ability Coordinator to receive participation materials/information.
(There is a cost to take the test.)
Test dates: December 10, 2016 & January 14-15, 2017.
